Wealth of Qarun and Prophet Sulaiman: What We Can Learn from Their Stories

Wealth of Qarun and Prophet Sulaiman: What We Can Learn from Their Stories

Muslimkaffah - Qarun was one of the wealthiest people to ever live according to Islamic sources. He lived during the time of Moses, and he was favored by Allah to the extent that Qarun was given knowledge of what Moses was receiving directly from Allah. Qarun’s wealth, however, was not enough to save him from committing major sins, including rejecting the messages of Prophet Musa and giving little regard to the divine punishment he brought upon him as a result of his arrogance and sinfulness.

Who was Qarun?

Qarun was a powerful man in the early stages of Islamic history who sought to acquire every advantage for himself, often coming at the expense of others. The Quran tells the story of how he wrongfully acquired his wealth through various methods, not just seeking goods but using trickery, coercion, or any other means possible. This prompted Allah's revelation to Muhammad (salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam) that punishment should await anyone who amasses this type of wealth by unjust means.

As a result, Allah (swt) revealed a verse to Muhammad that warns against accumulating wealth obtained through unjust means: And those who devour [other] people's wealth by false means—we will add to their sins a double penalty.

Story of Prophet Sulaiman (Sulayman) and the Hoarder, Qarun

In the Qur'an, one story in particular that highlights the idea of wealth being a responsibility is found in Surah Sajdah. It tells of the hoarding efforts by an anonymous rich man. When Allah eventually decides to release all that was contained inside this hoarder's storage, it was twice as much as what he had initially accumulated and his own weight became too heavy for him to carry.

Upon learning of his fate, he desperately pleads for forgiveness and threatens to throw himself off a nearby mountain. Allah responds by telling him that he can keep what he has if he gives back to society. Outraged at being unable to continue his hoarding, Qarun refuses to give any charity or even share what Allah has given him with other people.

The meaning behind this story

Prophet Sulaiman had a lot in common with the pharaoh. He built his people a tower and gave them access to everything they needed. The pharaoh, on the other hand, was rich but he wanted more power than just being a monarch so he enslaved his people and forced them to build monuments for him. Both the pharaoh and prophet sulaiman were wealthy but both differed greatly in how they treated their wealth, which led to different outcomes.

The pharaoh ended up dying with nothing, while prophet sulaiman died leaving behind a kingdom that his son, prophet yusuf, would go on to rule. When we look at how both men treated their wealth, it’s clear why they had such different outcomes. Both men were wealthy but only one used his wealth to benefit others. The pharaoh was blinded by power and greed which led him to treat his people unjustly.
