The Significance of the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah
Muslimkaffah - We often hear the saying, Adhere to the Sunnah and the Jamaah but what does this mean? Is it only a statement that we make at our daily prayers? Or is there something more to it? In this article, we’ll look at who Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah are and what this phrase means to them. We’ll also look at why adhering to their way of life as best as we can will benefit us immensely in this life and the next.
What Does Ahlu As-Sunnah Wa Al-Jama'ah Mean?
Al-Sunnah refers to the way that has been trodden by Allah's Messenger (Peace and blessings be upon him) and his noble Companions, who were instructed to adhere to it. Al-Jama'ah means unification. Unification of opinion around the Qur'an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him). Islam is a complete way of life – with guidance in all matters both large and small.
Creedal Beliefs
Believers in aqeedah ahlus sunnah wal jamaah believe that Islam is God's chosen religion. In it, they believe, He has revealed His will to humankind. Muslims also believe that Muhammad was a messenger and it is believed that through him, Islam was revealed as the true religion of God.
Belief in Allah (swt)
Belief in Allah is a fundamental aspect of one's life as evidenced by His omnipresence in all aspects of a believer's life. Allah creates and sustains us, provides for us and directs our path. He sends guidance to those who call upon Him and guides them towards light. Furthermore, it is not just about believing in the deity but about understanding what that means and being committed to following his way on an individual level, so as to enter Paradise through obedience.
Belief in Angels
One belief that sets Muslims apart from other religious groups is their complete and utter belief in angels. These angels act as agents of Allah on earth, carrying out his commands and doing his work while never disobeying him. Muslims believe that angels are spiritual beings made from light who were created to obey Allah alone.
Belief in the Revealed Books
Followers of Sunni Islam believe in all the books that Allah revealed to his prophets and messengers. The most significant of these books are the Quran, which Muslims believe to be from Allah himself and without any mistakes, additions or deletions; and the original message revealed to Muhammad (peace be upon him), called al-Injil.
Belief in the Messengers
Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, was sent to guide humanity and show them a practical way to live. To this end, he prescribed for them all the basics of living - worshiping Allah by doing prayer and fasting. He also showed Muslims how to deal with each other as well as with family members and strangers.
Belief in Destiny/Qadar
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, If one has knowledge but does not act according to it, he will be condemned on the Day of Judgement. If one does not have knowledge about something but acts according to what he thinks is correct, he will also be condemned. One's destiny is pre-determined for them in accordance with their ibaadah and amal - good deeds and actions which they do.
