 He was known for his wit and for being down-to-earth, in addition to being a world-class scholar. He once explained that in Islam, no matter what level of knowledge you have, someone else always knows more. So instead of competing with others, learn from them!

Sheikh Abdul Basit Abdusamad was born on December 12, 1934 in Ceylon. He completed his early education in Ceylon and graduated from the Islamia College, Sri Lanka. In 1962 he entered formal Islamic Studies at the famed Al-Azhar University in Cairo and graduated with honors. Sheik Abul Samad then studied for three years at Queens' College Oxford University where he obtained a Bachelors Degree (1st Class) in Comparative Literature.
